Funded by The National Lottery, Community Fund
In 2018, In Cahootz was awarded funding for the Creative Citizens Project from The National Lottery’s Community Fund for two years. This allowed the necessary time to support and strengthen the relationship with the participants and the different recovery communities Glasgow.
Creative Citizens is an arts and theatre project. Creative Citizens is aimed at anyone who feels they have a barrier in accessing the arts and wants to follow the company’s vision of an empowered, creative and confident society.
The Creative Team are consistently inspired by the quality, imagination and commitment of all the Creative Citizens’ participants who have brought so much of themselves to the project. They have been open and honest about their life experiences of homelessness, addiction and poor mental health and have all responded very positively to tapping into their creativity and imagination. This has allowed them to start taking back control of who they are and what they want to do. Some have found benefits from writing or performing, others through technical skills, design and stage management.
Participants of Creative Citizens have taken part in live performances, a cabaret, four short films, creative writing workshops, singing & voice tuition, art workshops and culture excursions. They are also given the opportunity to participate in an SQA community achievement award.
Feedback:
“When you have been an addict or whatever, the different back stories of people are in here, there is a feeling you don’t belong anywhere, no connection to anything. In here, I thought there would be a structure but had no idea how connected I’d feel to other people never mind myself. I had no idea I didn’t know myself as much till I started doing these weird workshop things, it’s amazing.” Male participant [aged 55]
