Rehearsals Start for Our 2024 Production, ‘The Heckleburnie Hecklers’

Rehearsals have begun for Creative Citizens 2024 production, ‘The Heckelburnie Hecklers’ by Martin Travers.

Set in a wee town on the outskirts of Glasgow, is the Heckleburnie Community Centre. It’s the heart of the community, where generations of families have called home. Between the leaky roofs and freezing cold temperatures, the centre is on its last legs. The community is in danger of losing the centre to big property developers, but they won’t go down without a fight.

We meet the colourful characters of Heckleburnie, from the power-hungry council caretaker to the diva stage-mother with the temper of a 2-year-old. And who could forget… Heckleburnie’s own local star-studded band – Cauld Sweat. Follow their stories and watch as they fall apart, and fumble to get themselves back together again.

The play, written by Martin Travers, came from a collaboration between our Creative Citizen Project and drama-based consultation workshops within Glasgow’s Recovery Community. These workshops explored what community means to them, different relationships, and the power of music. The material for this new piece of Scottish theatre was explored in our drama workshops and then passed on to Martin who worked his magic and put it all together.
