A Creative Citizens Production

Pigeon

by Martin Travers & Lee Hollinshead

Directed by Kate Black

Set & Costume Design by Rachel Mimiec

Performed on 22 & 23 March at Scottish Youth Theatre’s Brian Cox Studio, Glasgow

Pigeon was written by Martin Traverse alongside Creative Citizens participant and cast member, Lee Hollinshead. This was an original project that reflected people’s experiences, circumstances and feelings about society today.

Originally, the project was not going to culminate in a play but the material the group came up with was funny, rich and, at times, so hard hitting, the playwright suggested that it had the makings of a good play. Much of the story of Pigeon came directly from devised scenes created by the group.

Pigeon followed the story of “Pigeon” and how his history led him to where he is now and how society looks upon him. It centred on people’s love and hate for doos and was set in a Scottish welfare centre.

Feedback:

“I hope our play encourages you to look at pigeons and people differently. And I hope you agree that pigeons get a bad rep – like most people they are getting by on the cards society has dealt them.” Martin Travers, Playwright

We wanted the first Creative Citizens project, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, to tell the story of ordinary people’s lives. What you’ll see in Pigeon is what people experience on a regular basis.” Kate Black, Director
